Melaque, San Patricio and Villa Obregón are three small beach
towns on the west side of Bahia Navidad that are collectively known
as Melaque.
Melaque has a wonderful beach where fishermen and birds compete for
fish along the shore. Sunrise is spectacular and many people walk or
fish as the sun comes up while others sit out with a cup of coffee.
Winter days are pleasantly warm and whether you wish to swim, sunbathe
or relax with a cold drink your are sure to enjoy this beautiful setting.
Like most small Mexican resorts we have visited there are lots of great
places to stay and places to eat.
After a delightful meal in one of many restaurants my wife and I would
stroll down to the town square to buy an incredible slice of Tres Leche
from a street vender and enjoy the balmy winter evening with locals
and other visitors.
Part of Melaque's charm has been that it has been relatively undiscovered
and undeveloped. However, this is changing quickly, but for now it remains
a delightful vacation destination with a great sense of community and
a pride that is demonstrated in its clean appearance.
On Thursdays San Patricio's street market is well worth a visit. The
market is well supported by resident shoppers and offers a great variety
of clothing, household goods and CD's in addition to souvenirs.
Small hotels and bungalows charge from 300 Peso/night
for two people. We spent two nights in the newly renovated
Hotel Los
Caracoles. The rooms were basic but were immaculate and at
350 Peso/night we were happy. The hotel is just a few doors down from
the bus station that offers frequent service to Manzanillo and Puerto
Vallarta.
On our second trip we also spent some time at one of the many beach
side hotels and paid 460 Peso/ night.
